When we were visiting friends in Ho Chi Minh City, we asked them to take us somewhere that our 8-year-old could run around and play outside. We weren’t sure what to expect, but we figured that we’d be happy with any open greenspace that had shade. We were very pleasantly surprised when we arrived at Van Thanh Park. It was huge, with over 13 acres of land and 6 acres of water. It’s a wonderfully green, tranquil, and well-designed space with plenty to keep both kids and adults entertained.
Situated on the banks of the Thi Nghe River, a branch of the Saigon River, it’s just three kilometers from downtown. The park offers a mix of activities such as art, swimming, tennis, fishing, bicycling, playgrounds, and several restaurants. It’s also the setting for music, festivals, fashion shows, and other events.
Each weekend, the park hosts a buffet from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. serving more than 60 typical dishes of all regions in Vietnam.
We spent most of our time there letting the kids run, play and tumble in the grass. We also did some art projects that were on offer. We had other dinner plans, so we didn’t stay for the buffet, but it looked promising.
